Alcohol Abuse Stats and Facts
Alcohol is a widely consumed substance that plays a major role in many cultures, but excessive use can lead to significant health and social issues. In the UK, around 1.1 million hospital admissions in 2021 were alcohol-related, with binge drinking especially prevalent among younger adults. Regular use can lead to addiction due to alcohol’s effects on the brain's reward system, leading to dependence over time. Alcohol misuse contributes to a variety of health issues, including liver disease, cardiovascular problems, mental health disorders, and even increased cancer risk. Moreover, alcohol use is associated with about 3 million deaths globally each year, and it’s the leading cause of death and disability in people aged 15-49 in the UK. Despite the risks, only about 18% of individuals with alcohol dependence in England receive treatment.
