Most cancer biopsies are currently preserved using a century-old method called FFPE or Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded, which means; dipped in formaldehyde and then preserved in wax. This process has been used to accurately diagnose and stage cancer patients for over 100 years, but it kills the living cells and damages the DNA and RNA. This is important because many newer advanced tests rely on high quality tissue for testing and treatment recommendations and FFPE isn't accepted for many of these tests.
Speak with your doctor about your biopsy preservation options and how those options may affect your future options for advanced testing and treatments should they become necessary in your cancer journey.
Your Cancer. Your Tissue. Your Future.
Your cancer journey may change. Shouldn't your treatment options be prepared to change with it?
SpeciCare helps cancer patients preserve potentially valuable tumor tissue and living cancer cells through advanced biopsy cryopreservation and long-term cancer tissue preservation.
Here's something many patients don't know: Standard biopsy tissue processing commonly uses formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) preservation. While FFPE is essential for routine pathology and many molecular tests, it does not preserve living tumor cells. Certain advanced cancer testing technologies require viable, cryopreserved tissue.
Once your biopsy tissue has been processed and living cells are no longer viable, that opportunity may be lost.
That's why SpeciCare encourages patients to investigate cryopreservation before their biopsy, tumor resection, or cancer surgery.
WHY PRESERVE YOUR CANCER TISSUE?
Cryopreservation can help preserve opportunities for:
Advanced cancer testing: Maintain viable tissue for certain specialized laboratory tests.
Precision medicine: Support research into cancer-specific biological characteristics and potential treatment approaches.
Drug sensitivity testing: Enable certain laboratory methods that evaluate how tumor cells respond to different therapies.
Genomic and molecular profiling: Preserve biological material for additional DNA and RNA analysis.
Immunotherapy research: Support testing and research that may require living tumor cells.
Clinical trial opportunities: Preserve tissue that could be useful for eligibility evaluation or research protocols.
Patient choice: Maintain access to preserved tissue for potential future medical decisions.
Not every test or treatment requires living tissue, and preservation does not guarantee eligibility for specific treatments or clinical trials. But preserving viable cells before they're lost may create additional possibilities.
THE SPECICARE DIFFERENCE
SpeciCare brings together expertise in surgical oncology, pathology, cancer research, specimen preservation, and advanced testing to help patients make more informed decisions about their tissue.
Our goal is simple: Help patients preserve more opportunities for personalized cancer care, from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.
You may have only one opportunity to preserve living cells from a particular biopsy. Know your options before the procedure.
